Trevor asked me to help Logan cut out his Pinewood Derby car. We have an assortment of cutting tools (don't ask me to name any of them) and all of them are handheld. It has been my experience that no wood cutting tool is great if it is handheld, with the exception of a sawzall. But who cares. This was totally doable. I mean, the car is tiny! How hard could it be?
We planned the car out and drew it on the block of wood. We started out using a jig saw (hey! I do know what one of the tools is called!) to cut out the sides and shape them. Logan cut them out, my hand was just on the saw to make sure it didn't cut him or fall down. We tried to cut the top of the car out with the jig saw, but the blade was too short. In fact, looking through our tools, nothing we had was long enough. We were stumped. Then Trevor came out to check on us. He suggested using the sawzall. It sounded risky.... Hmmm, why not? I like the sawzall.
Under no circumstances was I even going to THINK about letting Logan use the sawzall. No way, no how. It is too dangerous. Plus, he was too scared. So I cut out the top of the car with this giant tool (it's really big) and it was only slightly crooked when we finished. Pretty good I'd say. You must know that a sawzall is not meant for cutting things like this. It is used for cutting large things. Like construction things, or I don't know, maybe cutting up a couch. :)
Anyhoo, then we got out the belt sander and Logan shaped the car on that while I held the sander upside down and held down the trigger. All in all it was super fun. I was really jealous of Trevor and Logan later when they got out the torch and were melting lead. NO FAIR! I don't think I've ever gotten to play with that torch, let alone play with lead. Boys get to have all the fun.
