Things I learned from the Dentist

#1 I should have been a dentist. People actually PAY you to torture them and be inhumane!

#2 Never make jokes about the dentist while he is drilling in your mouth!

#3 Don't wait 8 years in between visits.

#4 Don't forget to floss behind your very back teeth.

#5 I hope to never need a root canal while on Medicaid! They only pay to pull the tooth out! Can you imagine trying to gum your food?

#6 If the Dentist accidentally hits a nerve while drilling, DO NOT clamp down on his hand. He will not be happy with you.

  1. Okay, I haven't been in eight years, and this post hasn't inspired me to want to go! At all! What do you think about sedation dentistry? I'm sorely tempted.

  2. Eight years you guys??!!! Eight years? The dentist is a good guy. And this is coming from someone who had a severe trauma when young at a dentist in Guam. Bad dentists in Guam. Good dentists in the US!

  4. Well, there's the whole issue of health/dental insurance, and when you don't have it, novacaine becomes very expensive.

Also, I've spent a LOT of time in the dentist's chair, and I could tell you many experiences I've had which have led me to the conclusion that all dental procedures should be undertaken while the patient is sedated. I mean, if you're not drowning in saliva, the dental assistant is getting that little sucking contraption stuck on your uvula. And yes, I HAVE broken into tears in the dental chair.

Here's my last experience at the dentist (and probably the reason I've waited eight years to go back):

    DENTIST: (Drilling my teeth)
ME: Aaah! I can FEEL that!
DENTIST: Oh, sorry. I guess I didn't get you numb enough. (applies more shots and waits awhile) Okay, I guess you should be numb enough. (Drills again)
ME: Aaah! I can STILL FEEL that!
DENTIST: Aah, no. That should be numb.
    ME: Well it's not!
    DENTIST: No, it's numb.
ME: Seriously, I can feel it!
DENTIST: Well, if you say so. I'll wait a couple more minutes. (Comes back after a few minutes and starts drilling again.)
    ME: Aah! It hurts!
DENTIST: (Clearly thinking I'm the biggest whiner he's ever met) Look, I can't get your teeth any more numb.
ME: (thinking: I better just shut up and let him drill or I'll be sitting in this chair trying to convince him my teeth aren't numb for the rest of the day)

And that is the story of my last dental appointment, when the dentist drilled into my teeth and I felt every screaming, agonizing turn of that drill against my non-numbed teeth.

I'm not sure if the marks where I was clutching the dental chair ever came out.

  5. I can relate to the genius. As a child they never used sedation at all! It was horrible. I went to the dentist by myself when I was quite young and they didn't use anything. It was horrible.

But there is no excuse now for not having the medicine to cut the pain. I think you should consider a new dentist!!

  6. HA HA! Good story Genius! You forgot the one where the Orthodontist was removing your braces and PULLED your tooth out!

I don't think waiting that long is such a good idea. I am pretty sure they missed some cavities since some of my teeth hurt when I chew still. That means I have to go back again! Oh the agony! Oh the pain!
